About James L. Cooper

Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College of Wooster, and M.A. and Ph.D. recipient in American history from the University of Wisconsin, Cooper taught history at Oakland and DePauw Universities for 40 years.

Reviewer of more than 100 books, mostly concerning the history of science and technology, material culture, and historic preservation.

Speaker, commentator, and chair at a number of national professional conferences, numerous chapters of national engineering organizations in the Midwest, and dozens of historical, genealogical, and preservation societies and other community groups in Indiana and neighboring states on historic bridge topics.

Appearances on half a dozen programs taped for television and broadcast largely in Indiana.

Consultant to the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, and the Historic American Engineering Record (National Parks Service).

Invited participant in several workshops on historic bridge preservation variously sponsored by Federal Highway Administration, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and National Park Service.

Member of the Historic Bridge Alliance and of the Board of Directors of the Historic Bridge Foundation.
